Tuesday, August 2, is the feast of the Portiuncula. It commemorates a special place in the life of St. Francis of Assisi. The Portiuncula is a little chapel in Assisi where St. Francis heard the call of the Lord.
St. Francis asked the Holy Father to grant a special privilege to those who visit the chapel - a plenary indulgence (an indulgence is a remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins) . This special privilege continues to this day, but is limited to August 2. This privilege is not just granted to those who visit the chapel of the Portiuncula in Assisi. It has been extended to those who visit any church where the friars live and minister.
To receive this special privilege, you visit a church where the friars live and minister, go to confession within several weeks of the feast, receive Holy Communion, and recite the Our Father, Apostles Creed, and a prayer of your choice for the intentions of the Holy Father.
