Just before vacation, the 4thgrade at Saint Paul celebrated Chinese New Year – the Year of the Rabbit. A tradition in the 4thgrade, this event has been and continues to be a great experience for our students.
This year, our guest speaker for the event was Mr. Richard Kuslan. As an undergraduate, Mr. Kuslan studied languages at Yale University. He did graduate work at Yale in Asian Studies. After living and working several years in China, Mr. Kuslan now lives in Connecticut. We were fortunate to have Mr. Kuslan share with our students his experiences about Chinese culture and language.
All of the 4thgraders dressed in red for the day. They studied about the Great Wall of China as well as other customs that are part of the Chinese New Year. Wearing their coolie hats, the students marched around the school classrooms and hallways with their noisemakers to scare the evil spirits away and bring positivism, good health, happiness, wealth and longevity to all.
What would a celebration be like without food! This feast is known as "Wei lu" in Chinese and represents the unity in the family. Students enjoyed Chinese style food which was a huge hit!
Special thanks to our 4thgrade teacher, Miss Sullivan and all of our parent volunteers for making this a very special day. This is one of many activities our students do to appreciate the multiculturalism in the United States. We are continuing to accept applications for the 2011-12 school year. If you would like to schedule a visit please give me a call at 860-828-4343. COME SEE WHAT SAINT PAUL SCHOOL IS ALL ABOUT!
