On April 8, 2016, Pope Francis released a document titled Amoris Laetitia ('The Joy of Love').

It it referred to as a "Love Letter to The Family", and according to the chairman of the USCCB Committee on Laity, Marriage, Family Life and Youth, the document is "a rich reflection on the mission of the family and on how the Church can equip couples to embrace God's vision for marriage and can offer healing for families who are struggling". 

The official title of the 255-page document is the "POST-SYNODAL APOSTOLIC EXHORTATION AMORIS LAETITIA OF THE HOLY FATHER FRANCIS TO BISHOPS, PRIESTS AND DEACONS CONSECRATED PERSONS CHRISTIAN MARRIED COUPLES AND ALL THE LAY FAITHFUL ON LOVE IN THE FAMILY".
